Fractures of the scapula

The scapula (shoulder blade) is very rarely fractured as muscles surround it. The scapula provides the socket and roof of the shoulder joint. Fractures of the scapula may be extra-articular or involve the glenoid (Intra-articular) It is usually seen in patients involved in motor vehicle accidents. Associated injuries to the upper limb and its nerves (brachial plexus), head, cervical spine, collarbone or chest may occur.

Symptoms-
There may be severe pain and deformity.

Causes and risks
Motor vehicle accidents are the main cause. Contact sports like rugby and football are another cause. Fall on the outstretched hand are another cause

Treatment
This fracture is treated in a sling for two to three weeks and heals spontaneously. If the fracture of the glenoid is displaced then it may require open reduction and internal fixation.
